When do airlines owe you money?
In 2004, European Commission passed a legislation to protect passenger rights in the case of delays, cancellations, denied boarding and rerouting, referred to as Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.   • Claims can be presented up until six years after the flight, and they are not affected by how much you’ve paid for the ticket.
  • The airline doesn’t owe you compensation if the delay has taken place due to circumstances out of their control, like weather conditions, political instability, security risks etc., but they still have an obligation to take care of you with meals and accommodation, when the requirement presents itself.
