Ten airports you should avoid during your Thanksgiving travel

Did you miss your last Thanksgiving with your family and friends due to your delayed flight? Not this time, knowing the on-time performance of the airports before booking air tickets can save you a lot of time and headaches. At Instalocate, we analyzed the on-time performance of the top 100 airports in USA during Thanksgiving of 2018 (Nov 16 to Nov 28, 2018 time period). Based on which, we came up with the list of 10 airports that had the worst on-time performance during this period. If you are flying this holiday season, check out the list of airports to avoid.

  1. Memphis International Airport (MEM):

Memphis International airport with an on-time performance of 60.1% was the worst-performing airport during the last Thanksgiving. This airport serves Memphis, Tennessee. If you are planning to take a flight to or from this airport, do plan expecting some delays at the airport. The worst performance on this airport was shown on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

2. Louisville International Airport-Standiford Field (SDF):

Louisville International Airport is in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Just a little better than Memphis International, this airport showed an on-time performance of 67.8%. If possible, avoid this airport. Otherwise, the best day to travel from this airport last year was Monday before Thanksgiving. The worst day was the Monday after which an on-time performance of 83.9%.

3. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR):

It is one of the major airports of the New York metropolitan area with three runways and one helipad. This is also the third-largest hub in the U.S. for United Airlines. There are over 65 brands of restaurants, shops, and kiosks throughout the airport. Even after it’s rich infrastructure, this airport showed an on-time performance of 70.9%. This means almost 30% of flights flying from this airport in NewYork were either delayed or cancelled. This definitely goes into our list of airports to avoid this Thanksgiving.

4. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC):

It is is a major airport in the U.S. state of Alaska. You’re more likely to be delayed on this Thanksgiving if you’re flying from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport because of its on-time performance of 72.0%. We recommend avoiding this airport.

5. O’Hare International Airport (ORD):

This is an international airport located on the Northwest Side of Chicago with an on-time performance of 72.2%. There is a 30% chance of delay at this airport. If you are flying from Chicago and you get delayed, you can use your time to check out the shopping experience at this airport. The one day you should definitely avoid is the Monday after Thanksgiving.

6. San Francisco International Airport (SFO):

With four terminals, including a modern International Terminal, this airport failed to show a good on-time performance. With an on-time performance of just 72.9%, it made it to the list of the worst airports in the USA during Thanksgiving. If you are flying from SFO airport and get delayed, check out their aviation museum and library to kill your time.

7. Indianapolis International Airport (IND):

Located less than ten minutes from downtown Indianapolis, the Indianapolis International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the USA. But try to avoid it during Thanksgiving because it has an on-time performance of 74.2%. The best day to travel from this airport was Nov 18 i.e Sunday before Thanksgiving.

8. Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK):

Just a little better than the other airports on this list, Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK) showed an on-time performance of 75.6%. Unlike other airports, the worst day to travel from this one was just a day before Thanksgiving.

9. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW):

It is a major commercial airport on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. Because of its location, it has a large number of layovers. But the one thing this airport doesn’t have is on-time flights. It has an on-time performance of 76.8%. Best day to travel from this airport was day after Thanksgiving.

10. LaGuardia Airport (LGA):

This is one of the oldest airports of New York. Just like Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), the other airport serving Newyork, it made it to the list of airports with the least on-time performance during Thanksgiving. It grabbed a spot in our list with an on-time performance of 77.8%.
